Why 'Good Time' Made Robert Pattinson "More Confident in My Body"

Robert Pattinson had a Good Time with directors Josh and Benny Safdie at the A24 title’s New York premiere Tuesday night.

The drama stars Pattinson as a small-time criminal who attempts to race against the clock to break his brother out of prison after a botched bank robbery.

After shooting the adrenaline-filled film, “I’m more confident in my body than I used to be,” Pattinson told The Hollywood Reporter at the SVA Theatre. “It’s something about growing up as an English person — you’re very physically inhibited. I’ve done a few movies where I’ve actively tried to be more physical and break through my levels of inhibition and self-righteousness. It’s difficult. But as soon as I saw their last movie [Heaven Knows What] — it’s so kinetic — I just knew I wanted to do something with them."

The directing duo usually don’t work with established stars, but spoke highly of working with the actor. “He said to us, ‘I’m willing to do whatever it takes,’ and we took him at his word times a hundred,” said Benny. Added Josh, “He didn’t complain once, and his trailer was a minivan that sometimes doubled as a Steadicam dolly.”

Robert Pattinson, who is in Cannes with his latest film Good Time, will star in the two-part film The Souvenir along with Tom Burke, Ariane Labed and Richard Ayoade.

Joanna Hogg will direct the '80s-set film that centers on a young film student who is involved in her first serious love affair with a complicated and untrustworthy man.

The female lead has not yet been cast. Burke will play the male lead in the first film, while Pattinson will take on the leading male role of the second film.

Martin Scorsese will executive produce with his Sikelia Productions partner Emma Tillinger Koskoff. Luke Schiller will produce the film, which is being introduced in Cannes by Protagonist.

Pattinson was recently seen in The Lost City of Z with Charlie Hunnam and Queen of the Desert with Nicole Kidman. He stars in the Safdie brothers’ Good Time, which is playing in the festival. He’s repped by WME, Curtis Brown Group in the UK and Sloane, Offer.

"Oh god, it took forever to grow. I was so happy to get rid of it. It was disgusting, the whole thing was disgusting," he told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night. "And I had lost so much weight by the end of the shoot — nearly 35 pounds, we weren't eating the entire time — that when I shaved it off, it was like I had no bottom half of my face. Produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B, the Amazon Studios/Bleecker Street film makes its world premiere Saturday at the New York Film Festival, where it's the closing-night movie.

Amazon Studios and Bleecker Street have settled on a release date for the Charlie Hunnam starrer The Lost City of Z.

The film, directed by James Gray, will open in select theaters on April 21, 2017, and then expand. News of the release date comes on the eve of the movie's world premiere at the 2016 New York Film Festival, where it's the closing-night movie.

Amazon's original-movie division beat out other rivals in picking up rights to The Lost City of Z in September. It then partnered with Andrew Karpen's Bleecker Street on the movie's theatrical rollout. Amazon's Bob Berney will spearhead the marketing and distribution of The Lost City of Z alongside the Bleecker Street team.

The film, which also stars Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller and Angus Macfadyen, is produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B.

Set in 1925 and based on David Grann's best-selling book of the same name, the true-life drama centers on British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett (Hunnam), who disappeared while searching for a mysterious city in the Amazon. Gray penned the adapted script.

Sierra/Affinity is repping the film internationally.

Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner produced Lost City of Z via Plan B alongside Dale Armin Johnson and Anthony Katagas. Executive producers include Marc Butan and Mark Huffam.

The streaming giant has acquired North American rights to the film, which is set in the Brazilian rain forest.
Welcome to the jungle, Amazon.
The streaming giant is in final negotiations to acquire North American rights to the Charlie Hunnam drama The Lost City of Z, set in the Brazilian rain forest.
The film, which also stars Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller, is directed by James Gray and produced by Brad Pitt's Plan B.
The project, based on David Grann's best-selling book of the same name, was originally set up at Paramount, where Pitt has a first-look deal. But the studio stalled on getting the drama off the ground, and Gray took back the rights. CAA, which reps Gray, then assembled independent financing from MICA Entertainment.
Set in 1925, the true-life drama centers on British explorer Col. Percival Fawcett (Hunnam), who disappeared while searching for a mysterious city in the Amazon.
CAA, which also reps Hunnam and Pitt, brokered the deal for the film, which adds a big-budget epic to Amazon's portfolio.
Sierra/Affinity handled international sales at the European Film Market and will continue to sell remaining territories at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. With Lost City of Z going to Amazon on the eve of TIFF, there will be heightened interest from buyers for another Hunnam film, Papillon, which also is being shopped at the market.
Lost City of Z's landing at Amazon provides a final dramatic twist for the long-gestating project, which was originally developed as a Pitt starring vehicle. Benedict Cumberbatch also was previously set to star but bowed out to headline Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie.
As with all of its film deals, Amazon partners with traditional distributors to include a theatrical component to its releases, as it did with Woody Allen’s Cafe Society, Nicholas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon and Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship. Likewise, it will partner with a distributor for Lost City of Z at a later date.
Lost City of Z will make its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 15 in the prime closing-night spot.
Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner are producing via Plan B alongside Dale Johnson and Anthony Katagas. Marc Butan is executive producing, as are MICA Entertainment’s Julie B. May and Glenn Murray.

Ça ne ressemble en rien à ce que vous avez pu voir avant, le premier film en tant que réalisateur de l'acteur-rédacteur-scénariste Brady Corbet est un drame psychologique histrique, ou peut-être un drame historique de la psychanalyse,  qui dessine une étude de la montée du fascisme à partir des crises de colère d'un jeune garçon capricieux et de ses luttes pour le pouvoir. Avec pour toile de fond la conférence de paix de Paris en 1919 qui a conduit au traité de Versailles, L'Enfance d'un chef est aussi implacablement sombre et convaincant que la bande-son orchestrale du film par le musicien musicien Scott Walker est remarquable. (...)
Une séquence finale saisissante, filmée de manière impressionnante, située dans le futur, qui ne répond pas forcément aux questions et en pose de nouvelles. (...) Associé avec la photographie atmosphérique en 35mm du britannique DoP Lol Crawley et de la direction pleine d'assurance de Corbet avec un excellent casting, ce film est un mélange poétique avant-gardiste avec la puissance dramatique d'un bon cauchemar.

Ce premier long métrage du réalisateur américain Brady Corbet de 27 ans combine un beau casting européen, une direction artistique grandiose et une bande son tonitruante par Scott Walker, mais le résultat est un méli-mélo embarrassant qui est très difficile à suivre. On ne peut que se demander quel avenir attend ce film après son passage dans la section Horizons à Venise, et une brève apparition de Robert Pattinson est peu susceptible de changer son avenir.

Avce des films de David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog, Anton Corbijn, et David Michôd sous le bras - et des collaborations  avec James Gray et Harmony Korine à venir - et nous avons maintenant un autre à ajouter à la liste des projets à venir.

THR rapporte que l'acteur aura le premier rôle dans Good Time, le prochain film de Josh et Benny Safdie, qui ont réalisé l'un des meilleurs films de l'année, Heaven Knows Whats. Décrit comme un film indépendant qui suit "un braqueur de banque qui se débat pour échapper à la police qui se rapproche de lui." Même si aucun détail supplémentaire n'est disponible pour le moment, nous supposons que le personnage de Pattinson, Connie, est le braqueur de banque.

Un scénario de Josh Safdie et Ronald Bronstein, qui ont précédemment fait remarqué que le projet serait de filmer cet automne, probablement après que le tournage de Lost City of Z de James Gray soit fini. Director Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert starring Nicole Kidman and James Franco has been picked up by Atlas Distribution Co., marking the first time the entity will distribute a movie without Atlas Shrugged in the title. 

Queen of the Desert tells the true story of Gertrude Bell, played by Kidman, who was a British spy, an archaeologist and more at the turn of last century and ended up playing a major role in establishing the modern state of Iraq. She wielded an enormous amount of power for a woman of her era. 

Atlas Distribution was founded by John Aglialoro and Harmon Kaslow to distribute their trio of Atlas Shrugged movies, and they said a year ago they'd keep the company intact, infuse it with $25 million and release more films. 

Queen of the Desert is the first in that effort, and it is planned for release in late September on a 1,000 screens. 

The Atlas Shrugged movies, of course, were based on Ayn Rand's novel of the same name that is infused with individualistic themes that Kaslow says are present in Queen of the Desert as well. 

"Gertrude Bell was a real-life Randian hero," Kaslow said. "This is exactly the type of film we hope to bring to the masses with Atlas Distribution -- an incredible heroine who thought for herself, took orders from no one and had a lasting impact on the world." 

The film also stars Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence, a contemporary of Bell's who was immortalized in the 1962 epic film, Lawrence of Arabia. The movie is produced by Nick Raslan and Sierra/Affinity is handling international sales.

Focus Features finalise les discussions pour acheter les droits américains pour le film 'The Traps d'Harmony Korine, une histoire de revanche avec comme toile de fond l'univers de la musique à Miami, avec Idris Elba dans le rôle d'un gangster rappeur et  Benicio Del Toro en tant que son meilleur ami qui a fait de la prison pour un vol commis par le duo des années auparavant.

Elba remplace Jamie Foxx, et Al Pacino, Robert Pattinson et James Franco sont également en train de finaliser les discussions pour rejoindre le casting (Del Toro avait déjà été annoncé l'année dernière).

(...) Focus décline tout commentaire mais des sources disent que les négociations sont bien avancées. CAA arrangent, financent et repésentent les droits domestiques.

Encore mieux pour The Trap, Lionsgate s'occupe du film au niveau internationnal et devrait vendre le projet aux acheteurs étrangers durant le prochain Festival de Cannes.

Dans The Trap, écrit par Korine, Rico est au top de sa carrière et s’apprête à vivre une soirée triomphale lors des Grammy Awards lorsque Slim (Del Toro) est liberé de prison après 14 ans. Slim est déterminé à se venger après avoir appris que Rico a non seulement acquis la célébrité et la fortune mais qu'il s'est aussi marié avec sa petite amie et élève son fils comme s'il était le sien.

Le plan de Slim inclus de recruter une équipe de surfeurs armés menée par Max (Pattinson), ainsi que de demander l'aide du manager cocaïnomane de Rico (Franco). Pacino jouera  l'agent de liberté conditionnelle de Slim.

(...) Si le fait qu'Elbe joue un gangster rappeur n'est pas assez séduisant, attendez d'entendre quels sont les nouveaux ajouts au casting. Pattinson devrait jouer un surfeur qui manie le Uzi enrôlé par Slim pour l'aider à se venger de Rico, Franco aura le rôle du manager cocaïnomane de Rico, et Pacino jouera l'agent de liberté conditionnelle de Slim. Donnez-moi ce film maintenant, s'il vous plaît.

Passé la question sur le rôle de Dean, la matière qu’a choisi Corbijn semblait très intéressante. Premier fait, nous apprenons l’impopularité de Dean avant et pendant la campagne du film East of Eden. Souvent associé comme le fiancé de Pier Angeli (Alessandra Mastronardi), le rebelle de l’Indiana n’est pas encore l’icône qu’il deviendra par la suite. S’attardant sur cette relation amicale entre Stock et Dean, Corbijn parvient avec finesse à se fondre dans cette histoire, plutôt axée sur l’obsession de ce photographe, excellemment joué par Robert Pattinson, que l’impact de James Dean.

Fascinant, contrôlé, Life est un biopic minutieux et calculé. Ces éloges vont vers un excellent duo, Pattinson et DeHaan, ainsi qu’à Corbijn qui s’approprie l’histoire en recréant l’univers des clichés célèbres. Notons que le titre du film n’est pas la traduction anglaise de « vie », mais plutôt un clin d’oeil au très célèbre magazine américain. Belle immersion dans cette relation, tirée d’une histoire vraie, sous le regard d’un réalisateur qui, doit-on le rappeler, était photographe avant d’être cinéaste…

Qu’est ce qu’une star sinon quelqu’un qui ramène du monde, même quand il n’est pas là? Robert Pattinson est l’exemple parfait, comme l’a montré la projection presse de Life d’Anton Corbijn (hors compétition), dont il est la tête d’affiche. Son simple nom a fait venir une foule ahurissante, discutant dans toutes les langues, dans une file d’attente comparable à celles qui devancent les attractions de Disneyland Paris. (...) L’intelligence de Corbijn est de n’avoir pas casté Robert Pattinson pour jouer le Jimmy fumeur et photogénique. Ce dernier est interprété par Dane DeHaan, parfait en jeune homme fat, insupportable de flemme, de narcissisme et de poses. Pattinson, superstar et poster-boy depuis Twilight et qui fait tout pour se détacher de lui-même (chez Cronenberg notamment), est l’anonyme, masqué par la lumière de son flash.(...) Ce que Corbijn filme magnifiquement, c’est moins l’icône que tout ce qui va avec. Comme par exemple, le revers de la fascination que Stock a pour Dean, et qui n’est rien d’autre que la mise en lumière de son propre ratage. Il (Pattinson, fascinant) demande, envieux, à l’acteur : «Comment tu fais pour que ce soit aussi facile?». L’image est évidemment minutieuse, faite de déclinaisons de gris, de bleus pâles. Se mêle la reconstitution réaliste du New York pré-sixties, de l’ambiance des clubs et de l’Actors' Studio, et l’obsession de Corbijn pour cette mystérieuse qualité qu’est la photogénie - Pattinson n’est pas le pire canevas pour l’exercice.

Robert Pattinson impresses in this stylish drama about the relationship between celebrity and the media. An intense mob formed around the Berlinale press screening of Anton Corbijn's Life — such is the continued allure of Robert Pattinson. His fans beyond the festival will be pleased to hear that his brittle performance as LIFE magazine photographer, Dennis Stock, outshines Dane DeHaan's over-baked rendering of James Dean, although the latter is poignant enough to enliven this tale of men helping each other to take a leap into greatness...Pattinson's performance is as crisp as the white shirt and black suits his character always wears. This is a camouflage for his own problems that slowly unfurl, adding colour and improving the film...The social backdrop is just as carefully wrought. In another film, Ben Kingsley's fuming studio head, Jack Warner, would be The Other Man to Jimmy Dean and the tussle would be Saving Mr Banks flavour. Instead, Kingsley ball-busts just enough to give Jimmy's non-conformity gravitas, but the viewfinder is trained on the man behind the camera. Pattinson steps up, allowing more of his character's insides to come out. As Life proceeds the pace picks up and by the third act, it is a compelling dramatisation of an artistically fascinating alliance.

What transpires is an absorbing insight into the life of one of the industry’s mot renowned, and elusive stars....Given the undeniable charm and charisma of Pattinson, there was always the fear that he would steal the show from his counterpart, and be perceived as the star. However such is his understated, subtle turn, it allows DeHaan to take on that very role, which, given he’s playing James Dean, simply has to be the case.

DeHaan and Pattinson are also both terrific, at once elegant and charismatic, yet equally uncomfortable in the skins they inhabit. Dean's ability to mirror the dilemmas of a disenfranchised generation of youngster made him a star and whilst DeHaan's performance is a little over-exaggerated, he still manages to capture that sense of relatable despondency. This also affords Pattinson time out of the spotlight in one of his strongest roles to date.

Pattinson as the restlessly ambitious Stock is more edgy (you can’t help wishing he had been cast as Dean instead)

The two leads convince as actors; it’s the characters that are more of a problem. DeHaan method acts his way into the persona of a consummate method actor whose cool persona was partly a protective screen; his Dean is very much in the mould of the Dean remembered by his East Of Eden co-star Lois Smith, who once said: “He was a sweet, rustic person, but there was also this suspicious, taut, guarded young man”. Pattinson’s hangdog character is defined by an exchange in which, after Dean tells him he’s disappointed in him, he replies “you’re not the only one”.

review is bleh but I did wonder if anyone was going to muse about if Rob was in the role of Dean instead. It was something many of us thought when Rob was first cast and several media outlets during the casting announcement thought so as well.

Robert Pattinson in a sly turn as Dennis Stock...It’s the peculiarly moving, even subtly queer friendship between the two men that distinguishes “Life” from standard inside-Hollywood fare, while gorgeous production values and ace star turns make it a thoroughly marketable arthouse prospect...DeHaan and Pattinson enact this anti-romance beautifully, each man quizzically eyeing the other for leads and clues, while coyly retreating from scrutiny. Pattinson, adding to his post-“Twilight” gallery of sharp-cut screw-ups, brings intriguing layers of childish dysfunction to a character who is only ostensibly the straight man in the partnership.

Gone With The Movies:

For Robert Pattinson, his take on iconic photographer Dennis Stock is equally as impressive as he enters the world of Hollywood from the other side of the carpet (and at bottom). Spotting Dean's talent early, Stock, in the two-hour running time attempts to get photographs of Dean before fame kicks in. Deadlines, pressure and awkwardness soon mount-up, and Pattinson expertly presents it onto screen.
