'Queen of the Desert' has found a new US distributor, IFC Films, and is due out in theaters in Spring 2017.

IFC Films announced today from the American Film Market conference that the company has acquired US rights to Werner Herzog‘s QUEEN OF THE DESERT. The film, written and directed by Herzog, stars Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson and Damian Lewis.
The film was produced by Michael Benaroya, Cassian Elwes and Nick Raslan and was executive produced by Jonathan Debin, Cathy Gesualdo, James Lejsek, Ben Sachs, D. Todd Shepherd, Shelley Madison, Harmon Kaslow and John Aglialoro. IFC Films will release QUEEN OF THE DESERT in Spring 2017.
QUEEN OF THE DESERT is the true story of British explorer, cartographer and archaeologist Gertrude Bell (Kidman). Set against the backdrop of the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, Bell sets off on an epic odyssey as an attaché of the British Empire to chart and define the modern borders of the Middle East.
IFC Films stated: “The entire team at IFC Films is thrilled to be working once more with Werner Herzog who is undoubtedly a modern master of cinema. Having previously worked with him on his award-winning CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, Werner continues to bring innovation, elegance and poignancy to each of his films and his latest work is no exception.”
The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, EVP of Acquisitions and Production from Sundance Selects/IFC Films, with Cassian Elwes, Lawrence Kopeikin and CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.
IFC Films is a sister label to Sundance Selects and IFC Midnight, and is owned and operated by AMC Networks Inc.
QUEEN OF THE DESERT was financed by Benaroya Pictures.

It's now been over a year since Werner Herzog unveiled "Queen Of The Desert" at the Berlin Film Festival, and while it has played a small handful of festivals since, and opened in some foreign territories, the picture has mostly been under the radar. But let's hope the arrival of this new trailer means that a big screen release is on the horizon.

Starring Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Damian Lewis, and Robert Pattinson, the film tells the story of Gertrude Bell, the British explorer, traveler, archaeologist, and political officer who played a key role in Middle East politics in the 1920s, during the last days of the Ottoman Empire. It's potentially powerful stuff, but as our review notes, "the film does a disservice to the real Bell" by telling her tale in "a movie bracketed by romance." Here's the synopsis: 

A true story of the life of British explorer and adventurer, Gertrude Bell, QUEEN OF THE DESERT chronicles her journeys of love and loss in the Middle East during the early 20th century.

No exact release date this year, but look for "Queen Of The Desert" in cinemas this year.

Director Werner Herzog's Queen of the Desert starring Nicole Kidman and James Franco has been picked up by Atlas Distribution Co., marking the first time the entity will distribute a movie without Atlas Shrugged in the title. 

Queen of the Desert tells the true story of Gertrude Bell, played by Kidman, who was a British spy, an archaeologist and more at the turn of last century and ended up playing a major role in establishing the modern state of Iraq. She wielded an enormous amount of power for a woman of her era. 

Atlas Distribution was founded by John Aglialoro and Harmon Kaslow to distribute their trio of Atlas Shrugged movies, and they said a year ago they'd keep the company intact, infuse it with $25 million and release more films. 

Queen of the Desert is the first in that effort, and it is planned for release in late September on a 1,000 screens. 

The Atlas Shrugged movies, of course, were based on Ayn Rand's novel of the same name that is infused with individualistic themes that Kaslow says are present in Queen of the Desert as well. 

"Gertrude Bell was a real-life Randian hero," Kaslow said. "This is exactly the type of film we hope to bring to the masses with Atlas Distribution -- an incredible heroine who thought for herself, took orders from no one and had a lasting impact on the world." 

The film also stars Robert Pattinson as T.E. Lawrence, a contemporary of Bell's who was immortalized in the 1962 epic film, Lawrence of Arabia. The movie is produced by Nick Raslan and Sierra/Affinity is handling international sales.

Focus Features finalise les discussions pour acheter les droits américains pour le film 'The Traps d'Harmony Korine, une histoire de revanche avec comme toile de fond l'univers de la musique à Miami, avec Idris Elba dans le rôle d'un gangster rappeur et  Benicio Del Toro en tant que son meilleur ami qui a fait de la prison pour un vol commis par le duo des années auparavant.

Elba remplace Jamie Foxx, et Al Pacino, Robert Pattinson et James Franco sont également en train de finaliser les discussions pour rejoindre le casting (Del Toro avait déjà été annoncé l'année dernière).

(...) Focus décline tout commentaire mais des sources disent que les négociations sont bien avancées. CAA arrangent, financent et repésentent les droits domestiques.

Encore mieux pour The Trap, Lionsgate s'occupe du film au niveau internationnal et devrait vendre le projet aux acheteurs étrangers durant le prochain Festival de Cannes.

Dans The Trap, écrit par Korine, Rico est au top de sa carrière et s’apprête à vivre une soirée triomphale lors des Grammy Awards lorsque Slim (Del Toro) est liberé de prison après 14 ans. Slim est déterminé à se venger après avoir appris que Rico a non seulement acquis la célébrité et la fortune mais qu'il s'est aussi marié avec sa petite amie et élève son fils comme s'il était le sien.

Le plan de Slim inclus de recruter une équipe de surfeurs armés menée par Max (Pattinson), ainsi que de demander l'aide du manager cocaïnomane de Rico (Franco). Pacino jouera  l'agent de liberté conditionnelle de Slim.

Pattinson devrait jouer un surfeur qui manie le Uzi enrôlé par Slim pour l'aider à se venger de Rico, Franco aura le rôle du manager cocaïnomane de Rico, et Pacino jouera l'agent de liberté conditionnelle de Slim. Donnez-moi ce film maintenant, s'il vous plaît.

The film tells the story of Gertrude Bell (1868-1926) who, as historian, novelist and member of the British secret service, played a decisive role around 1920 in setting the course for the new political order in the Middle East. As an educated young woman, for whom no suitable husband can be found in England, she journeys to Tehran. After a tragic love affair with diplomat and inveterate gambler Henry Cadogan, she decides to give up on her private life and discover the region as an explorer. Before the backdrop of the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire she learns languages, translates literature, meets with Muslim dignitaries in Cairo, Basra and Baghdad and earns their trust through her pluck and respect. Predestined to be a mediator between the Orient and the British Empire, she contributes to defining the new borders in the region after the First World War. And then love enters her life once again. Werner Herzog uses the vast desert landscapes to depict the architecture of his characters' souls. A panoramic epic about the woman who has gone down in history as 'the female Lawrence of Arabia.'

In Queen of the Desert, the one-time Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson plays Lawrence of Arabia, aka T.E. Lawrence, alongside star Nicole Kidman as explorer, writer, archeologist and British Intelligence officer Gertrude Bell. Le casting est très prestigieux : Nicole Kidman, James Franco, Robert Pattinson…

Ils voulaient tous vraiment travailler avec moi. On m’a demandé pourquoi j’avais choisi Pattinson. Ce n’est pas un grand rôle, et il correspondait parfaitement. J’avais besoin d’un Anglais, qui ait encore l’air d’un écolier, mais qui soit très intelligent. Il joue Lawrence d’Arabie, mais à 22 ans, sur un site archéologique. Kidman, qui joue le rôle-titre, se demande ce que ce gamin vient faire là et un archéologue lui répond que le gamin en question a un doctorat. Pattinson est très bon dans ce rôle. C’est un homme intelligent et le choix était tout à fait naturel.

Lawrence and Gertrude Bell, and stars Robert Pattinson and, potentially, Nicole Kidman (after Naomi Watts reportedly dropped out)."I hope. I met with Werner about it. I've known Werner for a while," Franco said. "He's a huge 'Spring Breakers' fan. The talks about that movie really started after he saw 'Spring Breakers' and gave me one of the best phone calls ever. Rob has already said he has lot of admiration for Harmony Korine's work. Here is an excerpt of Rob's interview with Premiere magazine (France) of November 2012, in which he spoke of the director and 'Spring Breakers' : (Thanks to Robsessed for recalling this excerpt)

"I'm thinking of someone like Harmony Korine, in particular, whom I find particularly brilliant. He showed me his new film this summer, Spring Breakers, which I loved. I wouldn't want to jinx it, but I feel that it can really be a hit. I want to with directors like him, people who have spent their lives refusing to compromise, whatever the cost. If you look closely, they are often the ones who have longest careers."

'Queen of the Desert': James Franco serait en négociation pour remplacer Jude Law / James Franco is in talks to replace Jude Law

Je ne suis pas certain que ça se fasse vu qu'ils essaient de régler des problèmes d'agenda, mais le film 'Queen Of The Desert' de Werner Herzog  voit James Franco tourner autour du rôle que Jude Law devait jouer. Si vous vous souvenez, Herzog a choisi Naomi Watts et Robert Pattinson pour jouer dans cette histoire sur la vie de Gertrude Bell, voyageuse, écrivaine, archéologue, exploratrice, cartographe, et attachée politique de l'Empire britannique à l'aube du 20ème siècle. Law avait signé pour le film, mais s'est retiré il ya quelque temps pour interpréter le rôle d'Henry V, et le projet s'est alors retrouvé à l'arrêt. Obtenir un engagement de Franco permettrait de remettre le film sur les rails. Attendons de voir. Il y a une sorte de course concernant Gertrude Bell, vue que Ridley Scott a également un projet sur elle et qu'Angelina Jolie lorgne le rôle. (...)

I’m not certain it’s going to happen as they try to sort scheduling issues, but Werner Herzog’s Queen Of The Desert has James Franco circling the role that Jude Law was going to play. If you recall, Herzog lined up Naomi Watts and Robert Pattinson to star in the story of Gertrude Bell’s life as a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the 20th Century. Law had signed on to the film, but exited awhile ago to do the play Henry V, and the project ground to a halt. Getting a commitment from Franco would put the picture back on track. Stay tuned. There is kind of a race on Gertrude Bell, as Ridley Scott also has one that Angelina Jolie was eyeing. (...)
