Robert Pattinson is attached to play the lead role in Claire Denis’ upcoming English-language sci-fi film, written with British writer Zadie Smith.
Paris-based producers Alcatraz Film confirmed the casting to ScreenDaily and said: “We are very proud and very happy, as is Claire, about what will be a great collaboration. Robert is committed to the project and we are committed to him.”
Pattinson is set to play the astronaut lead role in the as-yet-untitled film, which Screen first reported on in June.
Plot details are being kept under wraps but it is known to take place beyond the solar system in a ‘future that seems like the present’.
Denis is writing the script with acclaimed novelist Smith (White Teeth) and Smith’s writer husband Nick Laird.
The project, which marks an intriguing change of direction for the White Material and Beau Travail writer-director, is based on an original idea by Denis and her regular writing partner Jean-Pol Fargeau and is due to go into production early next year.
Producers are Oliver Dungey (Miss Julie), Laurence Clerc and Olivier Thery Lapiney from Paris-based Alcatraz Films, and Claudia Steffen and Christoph Friedel of Pandora Filmproduktion in Cologne.
Alcatraz and Pandora produced Denis’ most recent feature Bastards, which debuted at Cannes in 2013.
Denis regulars Wild Bunch are handling international sales while Des Hamilton is casting the project, which is currently in advanced development and is due to shoot in studio in Cologne in late 2015/early 2016.
Collaborators on the film also include Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, known for his Tate Modern installation The Weather Project; astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, known for his work on black holes and cosmology; and Stuart Staples of indie band Tindersticks, who previously provided music for Denis titles including White Material and 35 Rhums.

After the immensely promising news that Claire Denis will follow up Bastards, one of our favorite films of the last few years, with a sci-fi film set in space, we now know who will be leading the project. According to L’Express, Robert Pattinson has been set to star in the project, adding another impressive collaborator to his resume after David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog, Anton Corbijn, David Michôd, and James Gray.
Based off an idea by Denis and frequent collaborator Jean-Pol Fargeau, the script will come from Zadie Smith and Nick Laird, although plot details aren’t being disclosed yet, though Pattinson will take the role of an astronaut. Frénésie et impatience pour “The Childhood of a Leader” de Brady Corbet, basé sur une histoire écrite en 1939 par Jean-Paul Sartre, qui sera projeté à Venise le 5 Septembre. Dans “Le Mur”, le livre sur lequel le réalisateur américain a basé son film, nous sommes plongé dans l'époque existentialiste, le mouvement philosophique dont l'écrivain français, qui regarde le monde avec des yeux nihilistes, était une véritable figure. Tous les personnages du livre sont emprisonnés dans une vie statique, une situation dont ils ne peuvent pas sortir. Mais pourquoi attendons nous ce film? Certes, la présence de Robert Pattinson au casting, en jeune fasciste perturbé, élégant en smoking et avec sa barbe, est une des raisons. Pattinson quitte un statut d'idole des jeunes pour devenir une nouvelle icône dans le monde du cinéma. L'acteur a osé et il a été récompensé: de Cronenberg à Herzog, il a accepté des rôles intenses qui ont révélé un talent inattendu depuis Twilight. Charles Marker, a boy who was searching for an identity, between a complex sexuality, sadistic impulses and a huge ego, is facing social, political and psychological implications that lead him to become a fascist leader during World War II.

But why we wait for it? Surely, the presence in the cast of Robert Pattinson, disturbed young fascist, elegant in a tuxedo and with his beard, is one reason. Pattinson, is emerging from a teen idol to a new icon of the movies world. Aujourd'hui Internet est rempli de photos prises avec des téléphones portables.
 

Comment gérez vous l'omniprésence des photos prises avec des téléphones?

Tout dépend beaucoup de mon humeur. Si je suis de bonne humeur, tout va bien. Mais quand je ne le suis pas, ça me dérange. Vous devez faire attention à ne pas paraitre bizarre et ne pas vous sentir persécuté: car sinon vous commencez à croire que les gens prennent des photos de vous, alors qu'en fait ils ont mieux à faire de leur journée que de faire ça.
 

Avez-vous bien surmonté le battage médiatique de Twilight quand vous aviez seulement la vingtaine ?

La plupart du temps je cherchais à me cacher. Vous vous retrouvez en état de choc. Vous ne comprenez pas vraiment ce qui se passe. mon évolution personnelle a stagné en quelque sorte. C'était bizarre: j'avais 22 ans et soudainement j'ai pris 2-3 ans de plus. Je travaillais et j'ai fait beaucoup de films à cette époque. C'était la folie. J'ai vraiment pu faire un break seulement après le dernier film Twilight.

While comic book sites breathlessly reported recently that Tom Holland was spotted in Germany, presumably suiting up to play Spider-Man in "Captain America: Civil War," it looks like the actor will racking up some more air miles.

Sierra/Affinity has announced that production has started on James Gray's long in the works "The Lost City Of Z." Holland has joined the cast of Charlie Hunnam, Sienna Miller, and Robert Pattinson, in the film based on David Grann's best-selling book about Percy Fawcett, a conscripted soldier and born explorer who disappeared in the 1920s while searching for a mythical city in the Amazon jungles of Brazil that he believed he discovered on a prior expedition. Production is starting in Belfast, where it will shoot for the next five weeks, before heading to Colombia where it will lens through September and October.

Basically, James Gray is going into the jungle for his next movie, and that doesn't get you excited, I don't know what will. Paramount Pictures will release the film in the U.S. And maybe we'll get a first look soon? With festival season heating up and everyone anxious to get their movies on the radar, fingers crossed.
