'High Life': Director Claire Denis Talks about Rob with The Daily Beast "I'm very happy with him"

'High Life': La Réalisatrice Claire Denis a Parlé de Rob avec The Daily Beast "Je suis vraiment heureuse avec lui"

From The Daily Beast:
(...) Denis will follow up Let the Sun Shine In with her first English-language film, High Life, a sci-fi effort about convicts who strike a deal to have their sentences reduced in return for venturing to a black hole. It’s yet another unconventional undertaking for the director, and one that will reunite her with Binoche as well as feature André Benjamin (aka André 3000) and, as headliner, Robert Pattinson. Given that production is just underway, she’s loath to discuss specifics about it, admitting, “I will wait until the film is finished. I cannot talk about a film when I’m in the process of shooting; it’s not possible.”
Still, she’s not coy about the obvious reason she chose to collaborate with the Twilight and Good Time star, proclaiming that Pattinson’s allure is undeniable. “What’s appealing to me [about him] is appealing to everyone, I guess. Is appealing altogether. I’m very happy with him!”

Here is an extract from Claire Denis' interview in Vanity Fair France magazine in which she talks about her encounter with Rob:

Your next project is a science fiction movie with Robert Pattinson. He seems to have insisted on working with you.
He didn't solicit me, but he wanted to meet me. I was thinking of someone older for the role. I panicked: What was the point of seeing him since it could not be him? He said to his agent: "Yes it can be me!" Another stubborn person ... Yes. One day I was in Los Angeles to meet actors and Robert, who stays there from time to time, came to see me. We spoke in the garden of the hotel. Why did he want so badly to work with me? It almost distressed me. Then I let go. It's so easy to love him; I liked him immediately. I already liked him at the end of Twilight - Oh lala that ending! Robert has something very special. He is not only good-looking, he is mysterious.

'High Life': Claire Denis Talks 'High Life' & Robert Pattinson in Les Inrockuptibles (France) + Translation

'High Life': Claire Denis Parle de 'High Life' & de Robert Pattinson dans Les Inrockuptibles (France)

image host image host image host

Partial Translation:
The original idea of  'High Life' comes from the day when Claire joked about Vincent Gallo: "You're such a pain in the ass that I'm going to make a movie where you'll be alone in space." The filmmaker has been carrying the film for 5 years and thought she would have to abandon it given the financial issues. We can imagine that the meeting with Robert Pattinson, infinitely more bankable than Gallo, was decisive. Claire remembers: "He wanted to meet me at a time when I was lost about this project. I was seduced by him since Twilight." An American critic wrote: 'Go and see Pattinson, who is an actor who hides an other actor inside.' That's exactly it! I think Robert doesn't want to endure a career that he can't control." She was won over by Pattinson, his knowledge, his intelligence and his liveliness. "One day, in London, I wanted to see 'Phedre' by Warlikowski, and I invited Robert. He asked me how long it lasted, and I said, four hours. I felt him hesitate. He came, most likely to please me, and he came out totally crazy about it! Now he wants to work with Warlikowski." He is an "open" guy.

It will not be a blockbuster of course. The set is small, the scenery is simple, there will be very few special effects. We will be outside the solar system so there will be a lot of black on screen.

In the rest of the article they talk about the other film of Claire Denis 'Bright sunshine in' and how she made research to make 'High Life'.

Scans thanks to Sally!

Robert Pattinson Talks 'Good Time', #VanLife, Upcoming Project with Antonio Campos & More with Esquire

Robert Pattinson Parle de 'Good Time', #VanLife, de Futur Projet avec Antonio Campos & Plus avec Esquire

Updated!

From Esquire:
Robert Pattinson's Darker Materials

Three years since he last met Esquire, Robert Pattinson remains dedicated to redefining himself as an expressive actor beyond the teen-hero hysteria of his early career. In his new film, gritty heist thriller Good Time, he finds redemption as a cold-hearted criminal and achieves the almost supernaturally impossible — walking around New York unrecognised

When he was shooting his latest movie, Good Time, in Queens last year, Robert Pattinson would start the day with a run. And he'd be recognised, as always. Such is life for the 31-year-old actor formerly known as Edward Cullen, the broody vampire in the Twilight movies. Over five years and five films, he inspired such a vast and hysterical following that more than any star of his generation he became a prisoner of his own celebrity. He was forced to sell his home in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, because of paparazzi at the gates. They trailed him everywhere, entailing all kinds of Jason Bourneism, like swapping clothes with friends and assistants in restaurant bathrooms, sending them off in decoy cars, up to five at a time. And if he failed, if just one tweet went out with his location, then armies of paps and Twi-hards, crazed and shrieking, would come galloping over the horizon like the Dothraki hordes.

But after each run, something extraordinary happened. He got into costume as his character in Good Time, Connie Nikas, a Greek-American criminal from Queens, and just like that, the staring stopped. He could walk down the street unmolested. This latest film is his best performance by some distance, an electric, adrenalin shot of a movie that will establish him as one of the most vital actors of the day, so there's that. But this gift of anonymity may be equally precious. Good Time will put Pattinson's name in lights while simultaneously helping him blend into the background. Shooting it gave him his life back. It's handed the prisoner a set of keys, because as Nikas, Pattinson could move through the world again. He was free.

Video Interview of Robert Pattinson with TchiTcha L'Hebdo Cinema (France)

The interview was recorded when Rob was in Deauville

What happened to your hair? Rob: "oh it's like a thing for Claire Denis"

It is a really good program. I really enjoyed it. They say really great things about Rob, his choices and his career. Too bad it is not completely subtitled in english. I translated Claire Denis' quotes about Rob for you:

"Being able to experiment something he doesn't already know, I think it's something that really matters to him."

About Rob in Twilight: "I'm quite a teenager too you know ... because in Twilight, he makes me fall for him! My mother who is over 90 years old, is moved by Robert Pattinson."

About Cosmopolis and Cronenberg: "When he talks about it it's hilarious! He says 'oh, I don't know what I did, I think I fucked in a limo for a week!' He has a distance about himself, but I know he didn't get there by accident."

About Rob wanting to meet her: "One day the casting director told me 'Robert Pattinson would like to meet you'. I said, 'Hey, look... it's not possible!'"

About being a Dior muse: "I think he doesn't look like he is the face of Dior. He looks like a gorgeous young man, who has agreed to stop by two minutes for a picture. He has no silly smile, he has no knowing expression. Not at all. And I love it!"

Great New Interview: Robert Pattinson Talks about 'Good Time', 'High Life', his Favorite Filmakers & Films with LA Times

Super Nouvelle New Interview: Robert Pattinson Parle de 'Good Time', 'High Life', de ses Cinéastes & Films Préférés avec LA Times

We learn that Rob will start shooting 'High Life' on Sunday!

From LA Times:
Robert Pattinson, serious film buff, on loving Claire Denis, Jean-Luc Godard and other world cinema favorites

With the release of “The Lost City of Z” and “Good Time,” 2017 may well be remembered as the year Robert Pattinson officially became a critics’ darling.

Some might claim the shift began in 2012, when the British actor, still best known for setting hearts aflutter in the “Twilight” movies, drew raves for his change-of-pace performance in David Cronenberg’s art-house chiller “Cosmopolis.” Since then Pattinson has reteamed with Cronenberg on “Maps to the Stars,” done further career-redefining work in David Michôd’s dystopian thriller “The Rover,” and earned plaudits for his appearances in films including Werner Herzog’s “Queen of the Desert” and Anton Corbijn’s “Life.”

But his versatility has never been on such dazzling display as it has this year, first with his shrewdly underplayed supporting role as the real-life Amazon explorer Henry Costin in James Gray’s “The Lost City of Z.” He followed that with his arrestingly deglamorized star turn as an amateur bank robber in Josh and Benny Safdie’s thriller “Good Time,” which opened in theaters Friday.

The steady accumulation of prestigious world-cinema names on Pattinson’s résumé represents the fulfillment of a dream that took root during his teenage years. Well before “Twilight” sent him into the celebrity stratosphere, Pattinson says, he was an obsessive film buff with a particular passion for French art cinema. Even critics who have been slow to appreciate the actor’s talent (guilty as charged) would likely approve of his taste, which has steered him toward favorites as different as Jean-Luc Godard, Leos Carax, Claire Denis and Herzog.

This month, Pattinson is headed to Poland to begin shooting the sci-fi adventure film “High Life,” the first English-language project directed by Denis, whose films he began watching avidly as a teenager. Pattinson’s other forthcoming projects include “Damsel,” a period western costarring Mia Wasikowska and directed by David and Nathan Zellner (“Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter”), and “The Souvenir,” a two-part romantic mystery from British director Joanna Hogg.

Have you always been an avid moviegoer?

I was into movies before I was even remotely into acting. I basically approached my career, at least for the first 10 years of it, trying to re-create my DVD shelf from when I was 17.

Tell me what was on that DVD shelf.

You could literally look at my IMDb page and see. James Gray was a massive one. Claire Denis. [Werner] Herzog. These are people I’ve just been crossing off the list. There was a lot of [Jean-Luc] Godard.

Robert Pattinson Explains why He Loves Claire Denis' 'White Material' to the NYTimes

Robert Pattinson Explique pourquoi Il Adore 'White Material' de Claire Denis avec le NYTimes

The NY Times shared their '25 Best Films of the 21st Century' list and asked Rob about Claire Denis' movie 'White Material' as he is set to work with the French director on 'High Life'.

From NY Times:
How did you discover Claire Denis’s films?
Robert Pattinson: I saw “White Material” about seven years ago and she became an immediate favorite.

What specifically draws you to her work?
Rob: Watching the performances in her movies, you can just feel the freedom she gives her actors. She creates an entire world for them to behave in. And I think having such wide parameters to capture things from means her movies can be built from an enormous amount of incremental details rather than a narrow narrative thrust. Her movies feel like waves building and breaking.

What does Isabelle Huppert bring to the character of Maria Vial?
Rob: She plays a character that seems to live steadfastly in her faith and imagination and yet still feels so human, accessible and raw.

Is Huppert our greatest living actress?
Rob: It’s difficult to think of someone who’s better.

Extraits:

Claire Denis: Oui, totalement.

Translation:

Journalist: (...) the shooting of her new movie 'High Life' is scheduled for 2017 in Cologne, with Robert Pattinson and Patricia Arquette, her first science fiction movie in English language.

Claire Denis: It's a film that takes place far from Earth, outside the solar system. I imagined that a woman would be fatal to a man. But in the conditions where she isn't a "femme fatale" (
irresistible woman), not a pin up. But she is fatal to him because she does something that is going to be fatal to him.

Via Respekt:

'High Life': ITW Audio: Claire Denis Parle High Life et d'Espace avec France Culture

A partir de 56:20 / Start at 56:20

Transcription:

Translation:

Journalist: Claire Denis, why did you want to expand to outer-space or so to speak go into space? We talked about sci-fi that might have been an adolescent desire, did it come back to you?

Claire Denis: No, not at all. It didn't come back to me as sci-fi, it came back to me as the story of some humans that are far away from earth. In the end it was their connections or their disappointments being all of a sudden so far away from earth that interested me. Death is imminent all the time. This idea that we are mortal that we are mortal is always on their minds and everything becomes so strong.... For me it's not because we are mortal that we need to tell stories, not at all.
