As a result, we reconsider him very seriously when he declares his admiration for 'My King' by Maïwenn, his desire to work with Olivier Assayas, or his passion for Michel Houellebecq.

He quotes an excerpt from a poem by Michel Houellebecq. (from 'The Meaning of the Fight') with a thick French accent but in the text: "We went through fatigues and desires without remembering the taste of the childhood's dreams." [In French: Nous avons traversé fatigues et désirs sans retrouver le goût des rêves de l'enfance]. If he doesn't quote the next part "There is not much in the depths of our smiles, we are prisoners of our transparency", it's because he doesn't relate to it. And he's right.

L'histoire 

Alors que la police fait tout pour le piéger à nouveau, un braqueur de banque, aidé de son frère, fait, lui, tout ce qu'il peut pour éviter la prison.  

Les enjeux 

C'est à Cannes en section parallèle (La Quinzaine de Réalisateurs) que les frères new-yorkais et trentenaires, Josh et Ben Safdie, se sont fait repérer. C'était en 2008 avec The Pleasure of Being Robbed, film indé et bohème, autour d'une jeune femme dans les rues de New York. Ils reviennent au même endroit, un an plus tard avec Lenny and the Kids, où l'on retrouve cette même énergie emprunte de fantaisie. 

Après un passage par la Mostra de Venise en 2014 avec Mad Love in New York, les voici enfin en compétition. Nul doute que la présence d'une star ou deux dans leur univers cabossé a contribué à leur dérouler les marches rouges. 

L'ex-vampire Robert Pattinson continue sa route vers un cinéma d'auteur après ses expériences chez David Cronenberg ou James Gray. Il sera aux bras de la revenante Jennifer Jason Leigh. Ce film, dont une grosse partie de l'intrigue se passe en prison, a été tourné dans une vraie prison du Queens avec des acteurs pour la plupart ayant connu une vie derrière les barreaux et des vrais matons.

It's in Cannes, not in competition at La Quinzaine de Réalisateurs, that the thirty-year-old New Yorker brothers, Josh and Ben Safdie, have been noticed. It was in 2008 with The Pleasure of Being Robbed, indie and bohemian film, about a young woman in the streets of New York. They came back in the same place a year later with Lenny and the Kids, where we find the same energy and creativity.

After a passage by the Venice Film Festival in 2014 with Mad Love in New York, they are finally in competition. There is no doubt that the presence of a star or two in their dented universe has contributed to roll out the red steps for them. 

The former vampire Robert Pattinson continues his journey towards an auteur cinema after his experiments with David Cronenberg or James Gray. Beside him, Jennifer Jason Leigh, who is making a come back. A big part of the plot takes place in prison in this movie. It was filmed in a real prison in Queens with actors who most of them had experienced life behind bars and real prison wardens.

Robert Pattinson is attached to play the lead role in Claire Denis’ upcoming English-language sci-fi film, written with British writer Zadie Smith.
Paris-based producers Alcatraz Film confirmed the casting to ScreenDaily and said: “We are very proud and very happy, as is Claire, about what will be a great collaboration. Robert is committed to the project and we are committed to him.”
Pattinson is set to play the astronaut lead role in the as-yet-untitled film, which Screen first reported on in June.
Plot details are being kept under wraps but it is known to take place beyond the solar system in a ‘future that seems like the present’.
Denis is writing the script with acclaimed novelist Smith (White Teeth) and Smith’s writer husband Nick Laird.
The project, which marks an intriguing change of direction for the White Material and Beau Travail writer-director, is based on an original idea by Denis and her regular writing partner Jean-Pol Fargeau and is due to go into production early next year.
Producers are Oliver Dungey (Miss Julie), Laurence Clerc and Olivier Thery Lapiney from Paris-based Alcatraz Films, and Claudia Steffen and Christoph Friedel of Pandora Filmproduktion in Cologne.
Alcatraz and Pandora produced Denis’ most recent feature Bastards, which debuted at Cannes in 2013.
Denis regulars Wild Bunch are handling international sales while Des Hamilton is casting the project, which is currently in advanced development and is due to shoot in studio in Cologne in late 2015/early 2016.
Collaborators on the film also include Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, known for his Tate Modern installation The Weather Project; astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, known for his work on black holes and cosmology; and Stuart Staples of indie band Tindersticks, who previously provided music for Denis titles including White Material and 35 Rhums.

After the immensely promising news that Claire Denis will follow up Bastards, one of our favorite films of the last few years, with a sci-fi film set in space, we now know who will be leading the project. According to L’Express, Robert Pattinson has been set to star in the project, adding another impressive collaborator to his resume after David Cronenberg, Werner Herzog, Anton Corbijn, David Michôd, and James Gray.
Based off an idea by Denis and frequent collaborator Jean-Pol Fargeau, the script will come from Zadie Smith and Nick Laird, although plot details aren’t being disclosed yet, though Pattinson will take the role of an astronaut. The only brief note we’re given is that it will “take place beyond the solar system in a future that seems like the present.” Additional collaborators include artist Olafur Eliasson and astrophysicist Aurélien Barrau, as well as Tindersticks‘ Stuart Staples, who has had many previous collaborations with Denis.
