9. “The Lost City of Z”

Synopsis: Un groupe d'explorateurs britanniques partent à la recherche d'un colonel qui a disparu en essayant de trouver une ville perdue quelque part en Amazonie.
Ce que vous devez savoir: Bien qu'il soit souvent comparé à Quentin Tarantino et Paul Thomas Anderson, il est facile d'oublier que James Gray n'a que 5 films à son actif dans une déjà impressionnante carrière. “Little Odessa,” “The Yards” et “La nuit nous appartient” sont de classiques drames moroses, inspirés par le travail de Sidney Lumet et Francis Ford Coppola, lors que “Two Lovers” et l'hypnotique “The Immigrant” sont respectivement un drame mélodramatique romantique et un grand film d'époque épique. What You Need to Know: Although he frequently earns comparisons to his New Hollywood buddies Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson, it’s easy to forget that James Gray is only five films into an already-impressive career. “Little Odessa,” “The Yards” and “We Own the Night” are moody, classicist crime dramas indebted to the work of Sidney Lumet and Francis Ford Coppola, while “Two Lovers” and the mesmerizing “The Immigrant” respectively tackled the romantic melodrama and the grandiose period epic. His newest, “The Lost City of Z,” looks to be his biggest, most ambitious and perhaps strangest film yet. The unforgiving jungle locale hearkens back to the early, dangerous cinema of Werner Herzog, and something about the juicy-sounding premise evokes the naturalist brutality of Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” and the inarguable classic film the novel inspired, “Apocalypse Now,” which is one Coppola classic that Gray’s never borrowed from. As far as we’re concerned, Gray is five for five at this point, and we can’t wait to see what the director has up his sleeve with this epic-sounding drama.

Release Date: Gray’s a favorite at Cannes, so if it's done in time, expect it there.

13. “High Life”

Réalisatrice: Claire Denis (“Trouble Every Day,” “White Material”)

Casting: Robert Pattinson, Patricia Arquette, Mia Goth

Synopsis: Un groupe de criminels acceptent une mission suicide dans l'espace dans l'espoir de trouver des sources d’énergies alternatives et participer à des expérimentations sur la reproduction humaine.

Ce que vous devez savoir: Si nous avions eu à deviner quel genre de film la reine du film d'art et d'essai Claire Denis aurait fait après le brutal “Bastards” d'il y a quelques années, nous n'aurions pas dit un film de science fiction avec R-Patz. Et pourtant nous y sommes, avec Denis prête à filmer son premier film en langue anglaise, écrit par la géniale Zadie Smith et son partenaire, le poète Nick Laird, avec le toujours aventureux Pattinson et la récemment oscarisée Patricia Arquette. Même si le sujet est inhabituel pour Denis, elle n'a jamais eu peur de jouer avec les genres, et ça devrait être thématiquement dans ses cordes. En fait, la seule raison pour laquelle ce film n'est pas plus haut dans notre liste, c'est qu'en fonction de la quantité d'effets spéciaux impliqués, il n'est pas tout à fait certain que le film sera fini pour cette année.

Date de sortie: Le tournage va commencer très prochainement, et sachant que, à part “Bastards”, tous les films récents de Denis ont fait leur avant-première au Festival de Venise, ça serait notre meilleur pari s'il est terminé à temps.

13. “High Life”

Synopsis: A group of criminals agree to go on a suicide mission into space in the hope of finding alternate energy sources, and to take part in experiments in human reproduction.

What You Need To Know: If we could have guessed what arthouse queen Claire Denis would do next after the brutal “Bastards” from a few years ago, we wouldn’t have said ‘sci-fi starring R-Patz.’ And yet here we are, with Denis gearing up to shoot her first English-language movie, one excitingly penned by the great Zadie Smith and her partner, poet Nick Laird, with the ever-adventurous Pattinson and recent Oscar-winner Patricia Arquette starring. Though the subject matter is unusual for Denis, she’s never been afraid to play with genre, and it thematically should be up her street. In fact, the only reason this isn’t higher is that, depending on the amount of effects involved, it’s not entirely certain whether it’ll be ready for this year.

Release Date: Shooting begins shortly, and given that, “Bastards” aside, all of Denis’ recent movies premiered at Venice, that would be the best bet if it’s done in time.

Il a un super casting déjà attaché au projet (en espérant que tout le monde est toujours impliqué), et nous sommes impatients de voir quel genre de rêve dingue enfiévré il nous a concocté cette fois ci. Si nous étions 100% sur que le film allait sortir cette année, il serait sans aucun doute dans notre top five.

Date de sortie: Le film devait se tourner ce mois ci. En assumant que ça se maintienne, il pourrait être prêt pour une avant-première à Venise, comme ce fut le cas pour “Spring Breakers”.

Special Mention: We’re Not Sure If This Is Still Happening in 2016, But It’s Highly Anticipated If It Is

“The Trap”

Director: Harmony Korine (“Trash Humpers,” “Spring Breakers”)

Cast: Idris Elba, Benicio Del Toro, Robert Pattinson, Al Pacino, James Franco

Synopsis: A gangster rapper is targeted by an ex-con recently released from prison.

What You Need To Know: As far as candidates for mainstream crossover status go, we’d have had indie world enfant terrible Harmony Korine fairly low on the list, and yet “Spring Breakers” proved to be a substantial hit in 2013, proving the eternal appeal of James Franco, as well as young women partying in swimsuits. It’s taken a little time for Korine to follow it up, but “The Trap” could end up making even more of a splash —if it’s still happening, as word’s been very quiet since the summer. A crime thriller, the director called it “sensory bombardment… a super propulsive, pretty highly violent revenge movie,” which sounds alright by us. He’s got a great cast lined up (assuming everyone’s still involved: schedules change, and if it is keeping to the original plan, it would clash with Benicio Del Toro’s “Star Wars” shoot), and we can’t wait to see what kind of bonkers fever dream he cooks up this time. If we were 100% sure that this was definitely going to be released this year, it’d undoubtedly be in our top five.

Release Date: The film was supposed to get before cameras this month. Assuming that holds, it could be ready for a Venice premiere, as “Spring Breakers” did.

Shifts on the casting front are only natural with such long progressions acting as a factor, but in the central spot of legendary cartographer Gertrude Bell has Naomi Watts remained — she now buoyed by the likes of Robert Pattinson, James Franco, and Damian Lewis — and the subject’s staggering impact on history gives the sort of thread this writer-director has proven himself deeply invested in for decades. (Fitzcarraldo being but one obvious reference point.) It might prove a perfect fit, and we can’t wait to see how Queen shapes up to his true classics. – Nick N.  

14. The Rover (David Michôd; Summer TBD)

After debuting the family crime drama Animal Kingdom back in 2010, it’s been a longer-than-expected wait for David Michôd‘s follow-up, but 2014 will finally bring it with The Rover. A likely bet for Cannes following its summer release, the existential western teams Guy Pearce, Robert Pattinson, Scoot McNairy and more, following a loner who tracks down the men responsible for stealing his car. If Michôd continues to display his knack for unbridled tension, this could prove to be one of Pattinson’s best performances. – Jordan R.

11. "The Rover"

Michod fait également de nouveau équipe avec Guy Pearce qui jouait déjà dans "Animal Kingdom", avec l'omniprésent Scoot McNairy dans le casting également.

Pourquoi le film est attendu: "Animal Kingdom" est un premier film des plus passionnants de ces dernières années. Cet film a capturé les débuts marquants de Michael Mann mélangé avec l'analyse anthropologique de Werner Herzog sur le comportement humain, des débuts à la fois terrifiants et tout à fait inoubliables. Alors qu'il semble prendre la direction de la science-fiction ici, Michod a promis que ce sera une histoire relativement terre à terre, une vision de la criminalité dans l'outback qui pourrait être le signe d'un mélange contemporain de "Wake in Fright" (avec un outsider échoué dans l'outback) et "Mad Max" (en mettant l'accent sur l'action automobile). Ce que vous devez savoir: Ce conte Hollywoodien, écrit par le romancier Bruce Wagner, est un projet en travaux depuis près d'une décennie, et semble tenir à cœur au réalisateur David Cronenberg: il a failli être produit plus d'une fois auparavant, mais a finalement été tourné l'an dernier. Apparemment plus proche de son dernier film "Cosmopolis" que de travaux plus commerciaux comme "Eastern Promises", c'est aussi l'occasion pour le réalisateur d'avoir un casting plus que prometteur depuis un long moment, avec le retour de Robert Pattinson et Sarah Gadon rejoints par John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams et peut-être le plus intéressant, Carrie Fisher, dans son propre rôle.
Pourquoi le film est attendu: Nous ne pouvons pas dire que nous sommes de grands fans des deux derniers films de Cronenberg, mais à l'idée que le légendaire canadien se décide à mordre la main qui le nourrit est un projet tout de suis très intrigant, et encore plus lorsque vous ajoutez des enfants acteurs toxicomanes de treize ans, de la pyromanie et des fantômes de stars mortes en 1960 dans le mix. Il y a beaucoup de grands acteurs ici qui semblent particulièrement adaptés pour travailler avec Cronenberg (Moore, Williams, Wasikowska) , et plus que tout, nous sommes ravis de voir John Cusack dans un film qui n'ira pas tout droit en VOD ou qui n'ai pas déjà été refusée par Nicolas Cage (avec ce film ainsi que "Love and mercy", nous espérons que 2014 est l'année du retour de Cusack ). Les premières images ici de ce qui pourrait être un autre "Cosmopolis", oblique et froid, mais nous gardons nos doigts croisés pour quelque chose de plus satisfaisant.
Date de sortie: Il se dit qu'il vise le Festival de Cannes, mais le Festival de Venise ou bien celui du TIFF pourraient être des options également.

11. “The Rover“

Synopsis: In a war-torn future beset by financial collapse, a man trudges across the Australian desert to locate his stolen car and secure the mysterious cargo found inside.

What You Need To Know: This is the first film for director David Michod since his riveting debut “Animal Kingdom.” It’s been described as an existential western, and it’s being fronted by “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson. Michod is also re-teaming with “Animal Kingdom” co-star Guy Pearce, with the fairly ubiquitous Scoot McNairy onboard as well.

Why Is It Anticipated: “Animal Kingdom” was one of the most exciting debuts of the last few years. That picture captured the sweeping scope of early Michael Mann mixed with Werner Herzog’s anthropological analysis of human behavior, crafting a debut that was both terrifying and utterly unforgettable. While he’s taking things in a vaguely sci-fi direction here, Michod has promised that this will be a relatively grounded affair, a crime picture in the outback that could be indicative of a contemporary mashup of “Wake In Fright” (with the idea of an outsider stranded in the outback) and “Mad Max” (with its emphasis on vehicular action). We’re particularly interested in how this takes place in the foreground of a financial collapse, and how close to modern day Michod wants to make it. 
Release Date: A24 has it currently slated for TBD fall 2014.

15. “Maps To The Stars”

Synopsis: Details a twisted Hollywood family: successful self-help magnate Dr. Stafford Weiss and his wife Cristina, who manage the career of their burned-out child star kids Agatha and Benjie, and also come into the orbit of an aspiring actor and a movie star haunted by her dead mother. 
What You Need To Know: This Hollywood-set tale, penned by novelist Bruce Wagner, has been in the works for close to a decade, and seems to have been something of a passion project for director David Cronenberg: it’s come close to production more than once before, but eventually got before cameras last year. Seemingly closer to last film “Cosmopolis” than his more commercial work on something like “Eastern Promises,” it’s also home to the director’s most promising cast in a long-time, with the returning Robert Pattinson and Sarah Gadon joined by John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Olivia Williams and perhaps most interestingly, Carrie Fisher, as ‘Herself.’

Why Is It Anticipated: We can’t say we were huge fans of Cronenberg’s last couple of movies, but the idea of the Canadian legend turning his attention to biting the hand that feeds him is an immediately intriguing one, and doubly so when you start adding drug-addicted thirteen-year-old child actors, pyromania and ghosts of dead 1960s stars into the mix. There are a lot of strong actors here who seem particularly suited to working with Cronenberg (Moore, Williams, Wasikowska), and perhaps more than anything, we’re delighted to see John Cusack in a movie that isn’t a straight-to-VOD actioner that hadn’t already been turned down by Nicolas Cage (with this film along with “Love and Mercy,” we’re hoping 2014 is Cusack’s comeback year). Early pics here for what could be another “Cosmopolis,” oblique and chilly, but we’ve got our fingers crossed for something more satisfying. 
Release Date: Said to be aiming for Cannes, though Venice or TIFF might be options too.

Pourquoi: David Cronenberg est un de mes cinéastes préférés, alors un nouveau film de lui est obligatoirement dans ce genre de liste pour moi. Mais ça ne me dérange pas d'admettre qu'il a testé ma patience dernièrement: "A Dangerous Method" était élégant mais pas suffisamment dangereux, tandis que "Cosmopolis", même si le coté excentrique était bien adapté, il était trop fidèle à son roman source pour me convaincre. Est ce qu'une satire d'Hollywood lui redonnera son mordant? L'idée semble étrangement prometteuse. Cusack en tant que psychothérapeute et parent d'un enfant star toxicomane. Wasikowska est sa fille pyromane, qui se lie d'amitié avec Pattinson, chauffeur de  limousine et qui rêve d'être acteur. Moore est une star qui veut refaire un des films de sa mère, alors qu'elle est littéralement hanté par la vieille femme, et ainsi de suite. Tout cela pourrait partir dans tous les sens, mais c'est un peu ce qu'on voudrait, non?

Why: David Cronenberg is one of my favorite working filmmakers, so a new film of his is not never not going to be on a list like this for me. But I don't mind admitting that he's tested my patience of late: "A Dangerous Method" was elegant but insufficiently dangerous, while "Cosmopolis," though well suited to his kinky side, was too bound to its source novel to soar. Will a Hollywood satire bring back his bite? The premise sounds promisingly silly. Cusack's a psychotherapist and parent of a drug-addicted child star. Wasikowska is his pyromaniac daughter, who befriends Pattinson's limo driver and wannabe actor. Moore is a star remaking one of her mother's films as she's literally haunted by the old woman, and so on and so forth. This could all go way out of control, but that's kind of what we want, right?

'The Rover' et 'Maps To The Stars' figurent dans la Liste des Films 'A voir' en 2014 de Esquire UK. Et avons nous une date de sortie dans les cinémas?

Nous sommes ravis de voir que le magazine Esquire UK a choisi deux films de Rob dans leur liste des films à voir absolument en 2014. Et nous les suivons à 100%! Et d'après eux, 'The Rover' devrait sortir en août au Royaume Uni et 'Maps to the Stars' à l'automne.

We are delighted to see that Esquire UK magazine chose two Rob's movies in their 'Must-see' list of  2014. And we agree with them at 100%! And according to them, 'The Rover' is due in August in the UK and 'Maps to the Stars' in the fall.
