Pourquoi avoir choisi Robert Pattinson/Cosmopolis pour la couverture?

Très tôt dans le processus de production, nous savions que nous voulions mettre en avant le film de David Cronenberg 'Cosmopolis' tout d'abord parce que c'est du très bon Cronenberg mais aussi parce que ce film est l'emblème de certains thème clés comme l'identité ou la représentation, des thèmes que le livre explore. Les liens de Robert Pattinson avec le cinéma canadien et la ville de Toronto sont encore plus visibles dans les films 'Maps to the Stars' (2014) de Cronenberg, et 'Life' (2015) d'Anton Corbijn. C'est un acteur fantastique avec une diversité phénoménale.

Tom Ue, the author of 'World Film Locations Toronto' which we already talked about, explains why he chose Rob aka Eric Packer for the cover of his book.

How did you choose Robert Pattinson/Cosmopolis for the cover?
Early in the production process, we knew we wanted to showcase David Cronenberg’s 'Cosmopolis' both because it is a great Cronenberg film and because it emblemizes some of the key themes about identity and representation that the book explores. Robert Pattinson’s links to Canadian cinema and Toronto as a city are further realized through his starring in Cronenberg’s 'Maps to the Stars' (2014) and Anton Corbijn’s 'Life' (2015). He is a fantastic actor with phenomenal range.

Finie l'époque d'Edward Cullen, le vampire à la peau pâle au cœur de la Saga "Twilight". C'est un nouveau jour pour Robert Pattinson, qui prend sa carrière d'acteur plus sérieusement avec tous les rôles qui se présentent à lui. «Cosmopolis», le film au parcours spirituel de David Cronenberg qui change le généralement affable Pattinson en un type profondément antipathique dans l'épaisseur d'une crise existentielle. Son Eric Packer est plus un alien qu'un homme, virtuellement sans émotions, et complètement irresponsable avec une arme à feu. It's a new day for Robert Pattinson, who is taking his acting career more seriously with every passing role. Case in point: "Cosmopolis," the David Cronenberg mind-trip that turns the normally affable Pattinson into a deeply unlikable numbers guy in the thick of an existential crisis. His Eric Packer was more alien than man, virtually emotionless, and thoroughly reckless with a firearm. The gulf between Packer and Cullen is as noticeable as Eric's asymmetrical prostate, and we salute the actor for going so boldly into strange new territory. Here's hoping for more

Emily: Qu'est-ce qu'il y apporte? Je pense, pour moi, ce qui est tout à fait génial c'est ce côté adolescent d'Eric, pas dans le sens qu'il est un adolescent, il n'est pas un adolescent, mais il a ce genre de "jeunesse" le concernant. Lorsque Robert dit les textes, j'ai ce sentiment qu'il peut les dire de n'importe quelle façon et que ça sortira de façon spectaculaire, à cause de cette jeunesse qui ressort de lui.

What Robert Pattinson brings to the role of Eric Packer in 'Cosmopolis' ?

Emily: What he brings to it ? I think that to me is quite genious is this teenage aspect of Eric, not in the sense that he is a teenager, he is not a teenager, but he has that kind of ”adolescence” about him. When Robert says the words I think that sense of he can say it anyway and comes out kind of spectacular, is because of this youthful tearing in him.

Non, j'aurais aimé qu'il fasse un demi-milliard de dollars au box-office! [rires] Le film a été reçu comme un film d'art, c'est-à-dire qu'il a fait de bons scores dans les grandes villes. Naturellement, vous voulez toujours le plus grand public possible, tant que cela ne vous oblige pas à compromettre votre façon de faire le film.

Pourquoi avez-vous choisi Robert Pattinson pour interpréter le antihéros en limousine Eric Packer?
Eric est absolument dans toutes les scènes, vous avez donc besoin d'un acteur qui soit suffisamment  intéressant et charismatique à regarder sur toute la longueur du film. Vous voulez quelqu'un qui peut vraiment vous apporter de la surprise et des angles nouveaux, et qui a un niveau de célébrité qui aidera à soutenir le film. Il devait également pouvoir faire un accent New-yorkais crédible. Tout cela m'a amené à Rob.

Were you happy with how Cosmopolis was received? 

No, I would've liked it to have made half a billion dollars at the box office! [laughs] The movie was received like an art film, which is to say it did OK in the big cities. Naturally you always want the biggest audience you can get, just as long as it doesn't cause you to compromise your moviemaking.

Why did you cast Robert Pattinson as limo-riding antihero Eric Packer?  

Eric is in absolutely every scene, so you need an actor who is interesting and charismatic enough to look at for the entire movie. You want someone who can really come up with surprises and angles, and has a level of stardom that will support the movie. He also had to do a credible New York accent. All of that led me to Rob.
