Toutes ces thématiques liées à l'invisible seront-elles dans le film que vous préparez et que vous tournerez en 2017, Idol's Eye?

O.A.: Pas nécessairement, C'est le film que je devais faire il y a 2 ans, il est plutôt dans la lignée de CARLOS. Un film autour d'un fait divers sur lequel j'ai fait des recherches extrêmement précises pour en reconstituer tous les détails. Ce sera mon premier film américain. Pour le scénario, j'avais besoin de de sentir que j'avais fait un travail précis. Ce n'est pas ma culture, ni mon pays, ni mon histoire. Cela m’intéressait d'avoir un aspect de quasi-documentaire dans la reconstitution du fait divers. L'histoire se passe à Chicago à la fin des année 1970.

Sylvester Stallone doit jouer dans le film. Pourquoi lui en particulier?

O.A.:

(...) J'ai besoin d'une figure à la fois puissante et inquiétante pour représenter Tony Accardo, le chef de la mafia de Chicago, un personnage historique très important mais peu connu. (...) Si on veut parler de la mafia, peu de comédiens de sa stature pourraient apporter une telle dimension (...)

Will all these themes related to the ‘invisible’ be in the movie IDOL’S EYE that you are working on and that you are going to shoot in 2017?

O.A.: Not necessarily, this is the movie that I wanted to make two years ago, it is more like the movie CARLOS; a film about a diverse news item on which I did extremely precise research to reconstruct all the details. It will be my first American movie. For the script, I needed to feel that I had done a precise job. It's not my culture, nor my country or my history. I was interested in making an almost documentary-like reconstruction of this diverse news item. The story takes place in Chicago in the late 1970s. 

Sylvester Stallone will play in the movie. Why him specifically? 

O.A.: I have always been a fan of Stallone, since ROCKY (1976), but also of the screenwriter and director that he is. He is always very precise with real authenticity. I’m in need of someone powerful and disturbing to represent Tony Accardo, the head of the Chicago mafia, a very important but little known historical figure. What is so powerful about Stallone is that he is not from middle-class, but working class (blue collar) background.. He has something popular. When you want to talk about the mafia, few actors of his stature could bring such dimension. I get along well with him, I find him very human. At the moment we only met twice. We shared simple things. It’s essential to talk about cinema and discover one another. Stallone is now more a director than an actor. So we share the same difficulties but of course on different levels.

(...) On sait que vous avez parfois eu par le passé des relations tendues avec l’industrie du cinéma. Si le projet commence à ré-émerger, on se souvient que vous aviez dû abandonner le projet Idol’s Eye quelques jours avant son tournage faute de financements. Qu’est-ce qui fait qu’aujourd’hui un film avec Robert De Niro, Robert Pattinson et Rachel Weisz a du mal à se monter ?

Assayas: Dans un premier temps, il ne se monte pas car on travaille avec un financier américain complètement irrationnel. Il y a une erreur dès le départ. Un mauvais choix. On se retrouve prisonnier d’un contrat avec quelqu’un de dangereux, complètement fou. On parle de quelqu’un qui, un mois plus tard, a stoppé un tournage d’un film avec Bruce Willis.

Ce qui s’est passé sur Idol’s eye n’arrive quasiment jamais. Nous l’avons interrompu car cela coûtait plus cher de le poursuivre que de l’arrêter en cours de route. Ce producteur avait une fortune personnelle, héritée de sa famille. Il jetait son argent dans le cinéma comme on pourrait le faire au casino. Il n’y avait aucune logique.

Aujourd’hui, cela devrait se faire mais rien n’est encore acquis. Toute cette mésaventure fait que l’on se traîne un véritable boulet et, si le film se fait, il faudra rembourser certaines sommes assez importantes. Ce sera un film long, un film d’époque. Forcément, cela coûte cher.

Entre temps, il y a eu ce choix de Sylvester Stallone dans le rôle principal…

Assayas: C’était mon premier choix. À l’époque, les producteurs ne le voyaient pas dans un film d’époque, en costume. Ils étaient trop sceptiques et m’ont recommandé Robert De Niro. Je le trouvais plus conventionnel dans le rôle – un chef de la mafia, c’était plus attendu – mais il est difficile de refuser un acteur comme Robert De Niro. Je le connaissais depuis notre participation au jury cannois. Nous avons fait un gros travail de préparation ensemble, quasiment scène par scène. C’était très poussé. Quand le film ne s’est pas fait, il était très déçu. Désormais, il n’est plus très disponible. Entre temps, Sylvester Stallone a été nommé pour Creed et sa côte est remontée, il devenait crédible dans mon projet. On me demande comment j’ai pu avoir cette intuition mais cela m’amuse beaucoup car Sylvester Stallone tourne depuis plus de trente ans, il a eu de très bons rôles.

Now the project starts to resurface, we remember that you had to abandon the IDOL'S EYE project a few days before filming, because of a lack of funding. What are the reasons why it is a struggle to make a movie with Robert De Niro, Robert Pattinson and Rachel Weisz today?

Assayas: At first, it was not made because we worked with a completely irrational American financier. This was a mistake from the start, a bad choice. We found ourselves prisoner of a contract with someone dangerous, completely crazy. It is someone who, one month later, stopped the shooting of a movie with Bruce Willis.
What happened with Idol's Eye hardly ever happens. We stopped it, because it was more expensive to pursue the movie than to stop it in the process of being made. This producer had a personal fortune, inherited from his family. He threw his money into cinema like one would do at the casino. There was no logic.
Today, the movie should be made, but nothing has been acquired yet. All this misfortune means that we now drag a weight and, if the film is made, we will have to repay a large sum of money. It will be an extended film, a vintage film. Inevitably, it will be expensive.

In the meantime, there is this choice of Sylvester Stallone for the main role...

Assayas: He was my first choice. At the time, the producers couldn’t see him in a period costume. They were too skeptical and recommended Robert De Niro. I thought he was more conventional for this role - a leader of the mafia, it was more expected - but it's difficult to refuse an actor like Robert De Niro. I had known him since our participation together in the jury of the Cannes Film Festival. We did a great job with the preparation, almost every part of the movie. It was an in-depth work. When the film was stopped, he was very disappointed. Now he is no longer available. Meanwhile, Sylvester Stallone has been nominated for Creed and his ratings have gone up, and he became credible for my project. One asks me how I had this intuition, but it amuses me a lot because Sylvester Stallone has been making movies for more than thirty years, he had very good roles.

Via le site La Nacion, nous apprenons que le réalisateur Français Olivier Assayas est en Argentine pour présenter son film 'Personal Shopper' au Festival du Film Mar del Plata. Il a parlé un peu de ce qui c'était passé en 2014 avec 'Idol's Eyes'. Il n'y a pas encore de date fixe mais il a mentionné Mars comme date possible de tournage et ça ne se fera plus au Canada pour cause de contraintes budgétaires. Il dit que les acteurs sont confirmés. Et il ajoute qu'il a désormais le contrôle sur son film, ce n'est plus sous le contrôle d'Hollywood. He talks a bit about what happened with 'Idol's Eyes' in 2014. There is no dates yet but he does mention March as start date and that they will no longer film in Canada due to new budget constraints. He says actors are confirmed. And he says he has control of the movie now, not Hollywood. "The only good thing of this experience is to be able to film with Stallone, Pattinson or Weisz." says Assayas about 'Idol's eye' casting.

Le réalisateur français Olivier Assayas confiait dernièrement lors de divers interviews le fait de pouvoir de nouveau, soutiens financiers à l'appui, réaliser le film 'Idol's Eye' qui avait été annulé juste avant son tournage en 2014. Vous vous souvenez de ce projet avec Rob et Robert de Niro? Et bien il semblerait qu'il soit réellement revenu à la vie deux ans après et que Rob soit toujours attaché au projet! Robert de Niro quant'à lui est remplacé par Sylvester Stallone pour des raisons de planning, et le tournage devrait avoir lieu en Février 2017 à Toronto. Rachel Weisz fait aussi parti du casting. 

Inspiré de faits réels, l'histoire suit un petit voleur (Robert Pattinson) qui vole accidentellement un diamant bleu appartenant au patron de la mafia de Chicago Tony Accardo (Sylverster Stallone), ce qui déclenche une guerre entre les deux protagonistes, alors que le FBI est sur leurs traces.

Some projects fall apart, but the persistence of the filmmakers and the right number of circumstances allows them to live again. Such is the case with Olivier Assayas‘ “Idol’s Eye.” Slated to star Robert Pattinson, Robert De Niro, and Rachel Weisz, financing was pulled at the last minute in 2014, leading the film to get scrapped before it had a chance to go in front of cameras. But back in September, Assayas teased the project could be back on, and it looks like it’s coming together again, albeit with one casting change.
Sylvester Stallone has replaced De Niro in the movie, which still has Pattinson and Weisz attached to star. Inspired by actual events, the story follows a petty thief who accidentally steals a blue diamond belonging to Chicago mafia boss Tony Accardo, leading to a battle between the duo, all while the FBI closes in on the pair. Assayas goes into thriller mode? I’m in. And I’m presuming Stallone will play the gangland figure, which could be quite something.
Production on the film starts in February in Toronto with a $25 million budget, and the timing may explain why De Niro had to drop out: Martin Scorsese‘s long awaited “The Irishman” might start shooting around the same time.
