Robert Pattinson talks about his wild new movie where he plays a small-time criminal: 'I'm confronting things in myself'

Robert Pattinson may be known best for the role that made him into a global superstar and tabloid obsession, playing Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” franchise, but he’s making it very hard for everyone to keep him in that box.

In his latest movie, “Good Time” (in select theaters Friday, nationwide August 25), Pattinson gives the best performance of his career so far playing Connie, a petty criminal who sets out on a mission to bail his mentally challenged brother out of prison. After the two botch a bank robbery, we follow Connie in a bizarre journey through New York, in which everything he does completely goes wrong.

To morph into a greasy Queens hood, the 31-year-old actor spent months working with directors Josh and Benny Safdie (Benny plays Connie’s brother in the movie) before shooting began, which included dressing in character and doing improvised performances with Benny in public.

With a cluster of eager paparazzi waiting outside, Business Insider chatter with Pattinson at the Bowery Hotel in New York City to discuss his new role, why he spends so much time on movie websites, and with more “Twilight” movies to come, if he’d ever consider playing Edward Cullen again.

Jason Guerrasio: You've said in interviews that it's seeing a picture of the Safdie's last movie, "Heaven Knows What," that sparked the interested to work with them. What were you searching for creatively back at that time?
 
Robert Pattinson: That. I mean, I don't do anything else. I literally f---ing look at film websites all day long. [Laughs]

Nous avions tout de suite vu que Rob se baladait avec une guitare sur le dos sur les photos du tournage de son film 'Damsel'. Et bien cette guitare devrait surement servir puisque selon IMDb, Rob devrait jouer une chanson nommée "Honeybun" (petit nom donné à sa bien aimée, comme "Ma chérie" ou "Mon coeur" en Français) sur la bande originale du film. Une sacrée bonne nouvelle pour ceux et celles qui attendent depuis longtemps d'entendre de nouveau Rob chanter!

We immediately saw that Rob was walking with a guitar on his back on the shooting pics of his film 'Damsel'. Well, this guitar should surely be used because, according to IMDb, Rob should perform a song called "Honeybun" on the soundtrack of the movie. Good news for those who have been waiting for a long time to hear Rob sing again!

Robert Pattinson had to wrestle maggots and snakes in The Lost City Of Z. He loves it when things get strange.

ALOOF, cool, brooding — that’s what I expect from R-Patz. The reluctant star, who broke through in Twilight, has only agreed to do one print interview (ie, us!) and I’m braced for something akin to teeth-pulling. Instead…

‘Hello, hello!’ Pattinson bounds towards me like a gangly, 6ft Labrador. ‘Where would you prefer to sit? Water?’ He wrestles with the bottle cap while we do a ‘no, you’, ‘no, you’ politeness dance over who gets the comfy sofa.

‘I feel this kind of ignition happens in press scenarios,’ he says. ‘I become suddenly a bit excited and want to please everybody and act like a bit of a moron.’

Bless him.

Aside from those extraordinary, almost reptilian, hooded eyes, which lend an otherworldly handsomeness, in person there’s nothing of Edward Cullen, Twilight’s chilly vampire heartthrob, about the 30-year-old actor and model.

Dior Homme’s latest ambassador is even less recognisable in The Lost City Of Z, in which he wore a ginormous bushy beard and specs to play Henry Costin, one of the first Brit explorers of the Amazon.

‘The real Henry Costin had a very dramatic Victorian moustache,’ he says. ‘I thought, with my face that might look too Noël Coward, so I had to do a full-on beard for eight months. It was pretty awful — I ended up getting these disgusting ingrown hairs xall over my face. Gah! I shouldn’t get into that!’

Even worse, a jungle infection required Costin’s beard to crawl with maggots. Real ones. ‘It was so gross — I was eating them and stuff,’ he says. ‘I think they had to cut that scene to get the rating down.’

Robert Pattinson portait une guitar et un fusil accrochés sur son dos alors qu'il débutait le tournage de son nouveau film Damsel ce jeudi en Oregon.
L'acteur de 30 ans joue dans un Western/drame aux cotés de l'actrice Australienne de 26 ans Mia Wasikowska.
Le film écrit par les frères Zellner et réalisé par David Zellner suit un homme d'affaire qui voyage dans l'Ouest pour rejoindre sa fiancée dans les montagnes.
Robert semblait prêt pour l'aventure alors qu'il déambulait avec une veste en cuir à double boutonnage, un jean et des boots en cuir.
Il portait également un pistolet dans son étui et une ceinture de munitions autour de la taille.
La star de Twilight a enfilé un fedora beige et portait un bouc pour son personnage.
Robert a été vu marchant avec un poney et le nourrissant à l'aide d'un sac de nourriture.
Il a aussi été vu en train d'utiliser un marteau sur un bateau en bois et aussi à ramer l'embarcation avec une boite à bord sur laquelle il était marqué fragile.
Mia a aussi été vu dans le bateau en train de ramer, avec le poney à la proue.
Robert a plusieurs films en préparation comme The Lost City Of Z et Good Time qui sont tout deux en post-production.
Il a dernièrement été vu dans le drame historique The Childhood Of A Leader qui est sorti en juin dans les cinémas US et à la demande.

He also had a pistol holstered and wore an ammunition belt filled with bullets around his waist.
The Twilight star donned a tan fedora and sported a goatee for his character.
Robert was seen leading a miniature horse and using a feedbag to provide a snack.
He also was seen pounding a hammer on a wooden boat and rowing it along with a box aboard labeled as fragile.
Mia also was spotted rowing the boat with the little horse in the bow.
Robert has several film projects in the works including The Lost City Of Z and Good Time that are both in post-production.

Nous attendions une confirmation officielle pour parler de cette rumeur qui circule depuis bientôt une semaine, et d'après le site Production Weekly, Rob fait bien parti du casting du projet 'Damsel', un western/comédie dirigé par les frères Zellner et dont le tournage devrait débuter ce 12 Juillet jusqu'au 2 Septembre! Le film est décrit comme un western comédie à propos d'un homme qui essaie d'épouser la femme de ses rêves. Annoncée au casting aux cotés de Rob, l'actrice Mia Wasikowska, une de ses amies avec qui il avait déjà tourné dans 'Maps to the Stars'. Tout deux devaient déjà travailler ensemble l'année dernière dans un western nommé 'Brimstone' mais ils n'avaient pas pu aller au bout du projet. C'est donc une nouvelle opportunité de les voir réunis pour un western. Et en plus une comédie! Nous sommes plus que ravies de voir enfin Rob dans une comédie! Genre dans lequel nous sommes sur qu'il va exceller! Il semblerait que ce soit pour ce film que Rob se soit fait faire de fausses dents en argent (lire ici). We were waiting for an official confirmation about this rumor going around for almost a week, and according to Production Weekly's website, Rob is part of the cast of the project 'Damsel', a western/comedy directed by Zellner brothers and which filming is expected to begin on July 12 until September 2! The movie is described as a western comedy about a man who is trying to marry the woman of his dreams. Announced in the cast alongside Rob, actress Mia Wasikowska, one of his friends with whom he has already work in 'Maps to the Stars'. They both were already casted to work together last year in a western called 'Brimstone' but they were not able to do this project. Here is a new opportunity to see them together for a Western. And a comedy! We are more than excited to finally see Rob in a comedy! A sort of movie in which we are sure he will excel! It seems that it is for this movie that Rob is going to have two fake silver teeth (read here). We don't know much about this new project for the moment but will certainly keep you update!
