'Life': Anton Corbijn parle du Film et du Rôle de Rob et du Casting: "Le film avec James Dean est en fait avant tout l’histoire du photographe"

Dans vos films, vous avez dépeint des hommes de talent qui s’éteignent assez jeunes - Ian Curtis dans Controle, et maintenant James Dean et le photographe Dennis Stock. Êtes-vous intéressé par le fait de montrer le processus de création du mythe qui s'est produit autour de ces gars-là?

Anton Corbijn: Si c'est la cas, c'est involontaire car je le ramène toujours à une vie tout à fait normale. En photographie, je peux comprendre que les gens pensent que je fais des images iconiques, mais avec les films, je ne pense pas que ce soit le cas. Le film avec James Dean est en fait avant tout l’histoire du photographe. Il est le rôle principal, ils partagent juste le temps à l'écran. J'ai eu une expérience similaire lorsque j'étais jeune en Hollande. J'étais le photographe de quelqu'un qui est devenu la plus grande star du rock que nous ayons jamais eu, (Herman Brood) alors il fut intéressant de voir comment cet équilibre a fonctionné alors que je pensais que je l'aidais et que lui pensait probablement qu'il m'aidait. C'est la même chose avec cette histoire.

Était-ce un processus facile de choisir Robert Pattinson et Dane DeHaan dans votre film 'Life' à venir?

Anton Corbijn: Dane ne voulait pas me rencontrer au premier abord, parce qu'il n'arrivait pas à s'imaginer dans la peau de James Dean. Mais il a été convaincu par un ami que nous avons en commun, et il a dit oui au final. Il est fabuleux, c'est un très bon acteur. Rob a été intéressé par le film parce qu'il cherche vraiment à faire ses preuves et pour moi c'était génial pour ce rôle. Si vous regardez les rôles qu'il choisi - comme ceux avec Cronenberg - il veut vraiment faire des films très différents, non grand public et sortir des rôles qui l'ont catalogué.

In your films you've portrayed talented men who burn out young – Ian Curtis in Control, and now James Dean and photographer Dennis Stock. Are you interested in the myth-making process that happens around these guys? 

Anton Corbijn: If anything, it's unmasking because I always bring it down to very normal life. In photography I can imagine that people think I make images iconic, but with films I don't think that's the case. The film with James Dean is actually about the photographer. He's the lead role, they just share screen time. I had a similar experience when I was young in Holland. I became the photographer of somebody who became the biggest rock star we ever had there (Herman Brood), so it was interesting to see how that balance works when I thought I was helping him and he probably thought he was helping me. It's the same with this story. 

Was it an easy process casting Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan in your upcoming film Life? 

Anton Corbijn: Dane didn't want to take a meeting with me initially, as he couldn't see himself in James Dean's shoes. But he was persuaded by a mutual friend, and said yes in the end. He's fabulous, a very good actor. Rob was interested in the film because he really wants to prove himself and for me that was great for that role. If you look at the roles he's taking on – like the ones with Cronenberg – he really wants to do very different, non-mainstream films and get out of that pigeonhole.
